My tips, ideas

Holiday, dating, anniversary ideas
- Instead of going to a hotel rearrange your room, clear things out, add some flowers or candles change the bed spread, put mints on the pillows and set up a t.v. in the room. Make a new place out of your old room, check out some movies and buy special ice cream for a nice romantic and relaxing evening.
- Write a song or a poem for your sweet heart
- Go on a picnic: put everything in a basket really plan ahead making sure you have food easy for a picnic and have at least 3 picnic spots in mind incase some are crowded. Also take a soccer ball, frizbee or plan to go hiking or play in the river to make your date complete.
- Go for a drive up the canyon and surprise your sweetheart by driving all the way to Heber and go to Granny’s or a special new spot and take out some take out food or fast food you hid away till later just enjoy the nature and beauty.
- Have a nice date starting with a nice homemade meal at home then go to a museum and walk about talking to each other and pointing out what each other like and why. End the night with a homemade dessert at home or going out for ice cream at the creamery
- Lots of pizza and food spots will have specials on Tuesday also Movie 8 has 50 cent night that night so you can go to a movie and get food for as little as 5-6 dollars. (Eatza Pizza has all you can eat for around $3.50 a person all the time)
- Have a nice night at home reading a book together and rubbing each other’s backs or feet.
- Go to Provo City free Monday night concerts at 500 N. 500 W. at the park there where they also give discount tickets for the Provo outdoor pool and you can end an evening swimming, diving and watersliding.
- Do an afternoon date going to a swim pool or other favorite sport.
- Ice blocking can be fun you could go with another couple and do a double date.
- For holidays plan ahead for all the meals, a homemade surprise, a special card, poem or song, go to a memorable place have family members or friends come serinande, with or without you, your sweetheart with a special song
- Put all of your change you get in a glass jar and have that be your dating money so depending on what you want to do you can do something free or use a little money from the jar or save up for a special gift or outing.
- If someone asks what would be a good gift for you suggest gift coupon to go out to eat or tickets to plays or concerts.
- Borrow a canoe or raft and go for a ride out on Utah lake or another river or lake taking a picnic or snack food.
- Go hiking up stewart falls, Timpanogus, up rock canyon, up to squaw peak, go for a tour of Timp Cave, explore different canyons and trails take a backpack with a few band-aids, a sweater, table cloth and food and drink, sunscreen and hats
- When you have children do trade babysitting with another couple that you trust. It will allow you to have more money for your dating and you can go out more often.

-Anybody appreciates a plate of cookies or brownies as a gift
-Use the dollar store, being aware of what they carry, keep in mind it changes but you can get tools, notebooks, gag gifts, baby supplies, toys, candy, jewelry, party supplies there.
- Giving an inexpensive gift that has a special meaning between you and the person wrapped in a pretty way and given with a thoughtful card is as meaningful as anything.

-Surprise with a clean car, room, office
-Give a gift of time and service: a listening ear, help packing, preparation for a wedding, bring over a meal, babysitting. All of these are so appreciated in real ways
*Remember your friends and family wouldn’t want you to go into debt or blow your budget to get them a gift. The important thing is the thoughtfulness in the gift and way it is given.
Household (Helpful hints and money saving tips)
-When you have busy days or have work prepare a crock pot recipe earlier in the day then you have a nice meal when you want it.
-Use grocery bags for small garbage bags
-Clean with Comet for sinks, toilets, bathtubs (only 79 cents at Target)
-Pour vinegar down drains starting to clog or drains that smell let sit for a hour
-Grow homegrown vegetables even in apartments see FHE manual for directions or Bearstein Bear’s Grow It or see if you can barrow a piece of land from someone in return for a share of the crops
-To help clean ovens or microwaves cook water to boiling then clean it will loosen hard to clean soils
-Use hairspray or alcohol to clean pen stains
-Use boiling water to clean carpet stains
-Use hydrogen peroxide to clean blood stains
-Use Shout or oxy-clean just spraining on stains before wash to clean most stains.
-Have one container of Lysol or WF brand disinfectant wipes handy to do a quick clean up of bathroom or kitchen for unexpected guests or illness
-When sickness is in the home or right after people feel better: sanitize all door handles, light switches, bathrooms and kitchens then wash sheets and spray Lysol in the air and open up the doors and windows to clean and freshen the air (also remember to sanitize toothbrushes w/ boiling water or Clorox)
Good deals on Groceries (Macey’s will often have these sales especially in the Summer)
-Bread $1.00
-Butter $2.40 a lb. (Costco is usually the best)
-Cheese$ 2.50 a lb. (Costco is usually the best)
-Hamburger $2.59 a lb.
-Skinless, boneless Chicken 2.99$ or less a lb.
-Cream of Chicken or Cream of Mushroom 0.79 a can
-Yellow onions 0.40 a lb
-Bananas 0.49 a lb
-Milk $2.50 (Costco or BYU Creamery)
-Apple Juice under $3.00 a gallon
-To buy Western Family or another cheaper brand doesn’t seem to make much difference except for in mayonnaise and salad dressings so at least try the cheaper brands on other things
-More you make from scratch the cheaper and healthier
-Make 4 or 5 loaves of bread at once it can last a while
-Freeze bread
-Buy shredded cheese in bulk then separate into smaller zip-lock bags and freeze extra bags
-Watch for holiday sales and buy two weeks before holidays on items like stuffing, ham, cranberries, candy etc. or week after the holiday
-It is worth looking at grocery adds and looking for sales for items you use and plan your meals around what is on sale, use coupons only if they are for something you would use and would save money on
-Buy the fruit and vegetables that are on sale and it will automatically make you rotate and save you money
-Have cookies or cake made once a week and you have them if a special occasion comes up. (Plus husbands often see special food for them as a love gift)
- Sometimes easier is better when having people over even if that means easy recipes, pot-luck meals, pre-bought rolls, pre-mixed salads, pre-prepared honey ham, letting your guest bring something because sometimes half the work is preparing your home for guests, the important thing is that you are not so tired that you can’t enjoy just being with your family and friends when they are there.

My Honey's a Hottie

Hello. Mike here.

My little family and I were walking down the street the other day on our way to a friend's house. Ruth was walking ahead, looking for the address since we were having trouble finding the place. She was also carrying a few bags of things to take to our friends. Jonathan and James were in the stroller and I was pushing them along.

A couple of guys were walking in the opposite direction. First they walked by Ruth. I didn't notice anything unusual. As they approached me, one of them asked, "Was that your wife that just walked by?"

"Yes," I responded.

"Wow. I'm jealous," the guy told me.

What??!! My honey is such a hottie that (even though she dresses completely modestly) I can't take her anywhere without her breaking some guy's heart because she is already married to me. I'm the luckiest, I know. I love you, Honey.

Well Ruth just had James so I'm not sure who will read this blog entry, but I just thought I'd do what I can to keep this project of mine going so I thought I'd leave a very interesting research about families on here:

http://www.fragilefamilies.princeton.edu/

and here are some of the research briefs you can read. It takes just a few minutes each:

My Mother 2008

Traveling now seeing children and grand-children
So much a mother still, caring for them all
Able to enjoy sights and travels, books now
New relationships and friendships with her grown children

Grandchildren to spoil
Dress them up, cuddle them, kiss them
Read to them, watch them, sing with them
Feed them, play with them, see them smile

Handling hard challenges and trials in stride
Keeping the family together being a strength
Acts of service everyday, so watchful of the needs of others
Following our lives with interest and love

A strong woman of courage, charity and sacrifice
Supporting, leading, keeping things together
We love you and understand more as we've lived more life
What a wonderful mother you are

Something new

Mom was saying that she goes shopping once a month. I took a jump and I'm trying that this month. I just got back from Costco and I spent so much money, but I just keep telling myself it's for the whole month. I quickly divided things into ziplock bags so we won't go through them so fast and I do plan on buying milk and fresh veggies weekly but I think this will be nice and I'll have one less errand every week. Has anyone else tried this once a month shopping? How has it worked for you?

some classics

So mom's aunt Lorna came over. I love it, her husband looks exactly like the BFG. Anyway I can never get over how much she looks like Grandma Vroman. I sure hope that one of my neices looks like me one day to bring back memories of their departed grandmoother. Doesn't that sound grand?

Oh here's a song I always remember Grandma D. singing

Here's one of dad and my favorites about Hitler:

and here's the german version

and the german version of another of Dad's favorite about the pirate queen Jenny. It's kind of the scary stereotype german for you:

this is the english version (watch out)

Some Good Advice

I wanted to share with you some good advice our Stake President just gave us. He said that he has been particularly concerned about the economy and how it will effect members of our stake. At his job he was brought a list of 50 employees that were ranked from the best to the worst. He was asked if he approved of the list and agreed with the rankings. He asked what the list was for and they told him that if the economy took a turn for the worst that this is the order in which they would let employee's go, starting at the bottom. He then went on to say that whatever our vocation, we need to be good workers. We need to come in early and stay late if necessary. We need to be productive and use our time effectively. He said that hard work is the great equalizer. It can make up for what we may lack in brains and natural ability. Our bishop has asked that if possible we increase our fast offerings to help those in our stake who are struggling with employment at this time. Right now Jared is in the process of looking for work, but I thought about how blessed we are that he can work and that there are opportunities out there for him. I realized that I also need to recognize the blessings of work in my life as well. The girls can be a handful at times, but I'm grateful that I am able to care for them. Trying to live frugally can also be a lot of work (I would much rather go out to eat every night rather than cook dinner), but the financial peace of mind it brings is worth all of that work and effort.

I have two book recommendations for you from the library and one children's movie.

Difficult to Delightful in Just 30 Days: How to Improve the Behavior of Your Spirited Child by Jacob Azerrad.

I haven't read the entire book yet but it looks really good. I have applied the principles and it already seems to be making a difference with Jonathan. Just one example: Jonathan has recently been running around in our parking lot and making me crazy. Prior to reading this, I would catch him, carry him and give him kisses telling him that I don't want any cars to hurt him. I realize that that is only encouarging the behavior because he wants my response. I have started to ignore his behavior which is just bad but not life threatening or hurtful to others and focus on recognizing when he does things right. Now I give him the attention and praise when he holds my hand in the parking lot and he seems to be doing it more on his own because it makes him feel like a big boy.

What I really like is it how they encouarge parents to not reward negative behaviors, but give ample praise and support and talk about 1. when the child shows self-control, 2. when the child is kind and 3. when the child shows empathy.

The other book is called, Help Around the House: A Mothe's Guide to Getting the Family to Pitch in and Clean Up by Don Aslett. All of his books are quite good, but this gave great ideas for teaching even young children responsiblity through household chores. We are making sure Jonathan is taking his plate over after meals and helping to clean up his toys and it seems to be a really good thing for him.

The Letter Factory is a great movie to help children learn the sounds of the different letters.

Okay, that's all for today.

Love,
Ruth

the more the merrier

http://thatrachel.blogspot.com/

I decided to also continue my other blog so you all don't become bogged down with Rachelness--though that would be difficult.

ohh I forgot, I really like listening to things while I clean or am doing mindless tasks. If you guys download itunes, go to the itunes store and type in "neat and dirty tips" and it will come up with a bunch of free downloads with are great and you can listen to everyday.

I downloaded the grammer girl one, the mighty mama, and mr. manners. I thought you guys might like it too.

This is one of my new favorite paintings. It's by an LDS artist Brian Kershisnik. Look at it first before you read the rest. What do you think it is trying to say? I didn't realize it's intended meaning the first time I sat down on the 4th floor of the JFSB waiting for a professor and reading the book. Well not much of the book got read, instead I starred at this painting. I simply couldn't stop looking at it, in fact I think I made the kid nervous sitting by the painting because he thought I was looking at him. Anyway, it's called Nativity. I love the faces and joy and wonder in all the faces. Before I knew its title I thought that they all might be ansestors or posterity.

Funny Rachel

Well, I actually had never thought of most of those names to begin with, but I find myself actually thinking they might make nice children's names after all. I don't know about Gywntheaina or whatever that one was but I think Rachel is so fun. I feel a little spoiled that I get to have her so close and I wish everyone else could live close too. Then again maybe we wouldn't love eachother quite so much, I really don't know.

I wish Jared and Mary the best with their job searching and upcoming graduation. I really think Jared and very smart and will make a wonderful PA, Mary is amazing with her two little girls so close together. Emily just started taking her diaper off and starting to unzip her p.j.'s so I'll keep my fingers crossed that she won't start following little Mary's and Abigals example and I have to start putting her p.j.'s on backwards.

I think Ruth and Mike are wonderful and am so excited about Ruth's upcoming little guy, she has been wonderful with Jonathan and will love this little baby so much too. Mike is a hard worker and just an all around cool person in so many respects. I think about how frustrating it must have been when he broke his leg a year and a half ago, just with Gordon's inconviences and frustrations with his arm cast after just breaking a pinky finger.

I wish Andrew and Nikki a happy anniversary and a wonderful year ahead for them and am happy for their marriage and beautiful little Clarity. Gordon and I just celebrated our 12th year anniversary (no it's not till the 26th offically but Mom and Dad offered to watch the kids on an over-nighter). We had a wonderful time and actually went someplace and realized we like eachother still and had a good time, and really appreciate Mom and Dad and Rach helping out, it was needed.

We congratulate Joseph's graduation from Medical school and are so happy for them and wish them well on their move to New Orleans. Again, I feel so bad that both Joseph and Nichole had to experience arm/wrist casts and how annoying that must have been, now that we have more sympathy with Gordon's little accident. I'm sure Nichole has had her arms full with her two young ones and getting ready to move. I've been pretending we are moving, trying to simplify and organize my home, getting rid of stuff and knowing whats actually in our house. It is amazing what you can accummulate in a span of almost 5 years in one place without moving.

I love my family so much. I am so grateful for Mom and Dad having and raising us six little rambunchious kids and I am so grateful we have eachother as siblings. I am grateful for family and the gospel, for my children and my life, even though it is four o'clock in the morning and I can't sleep I'm thinking of all of you and how much I love you all.

Hey Family,

I just read a little section of the website I sent you and it is really neat. Really, it is worth checking out.

http://education.byu.edu/youcandothis/

The part I read was about consequences in being consistent with both good and bad ones. It had great tips and explained that even though it is tough, it is easier in the long run - so true.

Thank goodness we can change. For example, I sometimes give Jonathan milk or water in a sippy cup if he seems to be really upset before I leave the room at night. Mike never lets him have milk or water in bed. . . so it isn't good for him. I need to decide now that I'll let him cry while I break the habit of giving him milk or water in bed. . . Okay, you'll have to see how I do.

-Ruth

Whether or not you want it

Yes, I am creating a blog for my service to family for the year. Aren't you all grateful? Well, I hope so. I thought this would be easier than always e-mailing things, though that practice can continue so I have purpose in checking my e-mail at all.
